UPVC windows ‘not in keeping’
LOOSE Parish Council fears the character of the Loose Conserva- tion Area is being threatened by UPVC windows. Its objection to a proposal to re-
place existing wooden windows and doors with UPVC units at Whispering Waters, High Banks failed to prevent Maidstone Coun- cil’s planning committee from granting planning permission. Cllr Gordon Bernard was con-
cerned the scheme could set a prece- dent. He said: “We consider UPVC does not fit in with the historic char- acter of Loose. Traditional materials are more in keeping. “To our knowledge Maidstone Council has not allowed this kind of application in the past within the conservation area. Loose Parish Council would certainly not en- dorse this.” However, Maidstone Council’s
A PROPOSED new arts and enter- tainment venue at 20 Warwick Place, Maidstone has been refused planning permission. An application sought to convert
a workshop into a cafe and bar with art exhibitions, concerts, classes and music. There were four objections, mainly due to the likelihood of more noise and disturbance and further parking pressures. One resident wrote:“We already
have a public house and a club house in very close proximity to the back of our garden that pro-

conservation officer raised no objec- tion and the committee unani- mously backed the application. MrHighstead, on behalf of the ap- plicant, said: “We are not setting a precedent. In the conservation area there are existing examples of UPVC windows. The house was built along with four others that have been updated to include UPVC windows; ours is the only one that hasn’t.Approval of this ap- plication will in no way affect the aesthetics of the conservation area.”
Noise fears prevent arts bar
duces significantly high levels of noise of an evening, with both ven- ues having bands playing through- out the year. I certainly do not relish the thought of a further venue that hosts live bands or con- certs at the end of our garden gen- erating more unwanted noise. “We also have a cafe/tapas bar
very close to us on Tonbridge Road.”
Maidstone Council turned down
the scheme due to its concerns about noise and disturbance, high- way safety and loss of privacy for residents.
More flats planned at offices THE number of flats proposed for Miller House in Lower Stone Street, Maidstone has risen to 99. Last year, planning permission was granted to convert the office
block into 63 flats. Maidstone Council will decide whether to allow a higher density residential scheme.
Good result for pre-school
AN inspection of a pre-school in Maidstone has produced a good re- sult for the children’s group that meets in the town’s MethodistCom- munity Centre. The Ofsted inspection ratedWes-
ley Pre-School in Brewer Street good on all aspects of provision for its 25 youngsters, aged two to eight. Quality of teaching was rated
good and was judged by inspector Nicola Jones to be interesting and well-planned. She said: “Children settlewell be-
cause staff buildwarm and trusting relationships with them and the staff establish good partnerships
with parents, which promotes a shared approach to their ongoing learning.” The report said the manager and
staffwere fullyaware of their role in keeping their charges safe. It added: “Effective leadership en-
sures that good systems, such as staff supervision, support and train- ing enhance staff's professional de- velopment and practice.” The pre-school, which ismanaged
by a parent committee, was urged to find fresh ways to engage children during periods such as snack time, and to make greater use of the out- door play area.
