Ofsted praise for child care centre
ONEof Maidstone’s newest child care centres has been declared good following its latest Ofsted inspection. Little Learners Child Care Cen-
tre opened at the New Line Learn- ing Academy, Boughton Lane, in 2010, as part of the Future Schools Trust. The centre is open each weekday from 7.30am to 5pm for 40 weeks of the year and employs 14 qualified staff, including the manager. An Early Years’ Register inspec-
tion in February this year found that the manager and staff had good links with neighbouring schools, which helped the children prepare well for starting school. They settle quickly and staff planned activities that matched the children's interests, needs and abil- ities, ensuring that they made good progress. Inspector Nicola Jones found the
early years’ provision met the needs of the range of children who
attend and contributed to their wellbeing. However, she said it fell short of
being outstanding, as staff some- times missed opportunities to ex- tend children’s mathematical skills outdoors and some adult-led group activities did not always maintain the children's interest. The inspector carried out a joint observation with the manager, wit- nessing children's play and staff in- teractions, both indoors and outdoors. She studied the children's records and documentation on staff suitability and qualifications, policies and procedures. To further improve the quality of
the early years provision the centre should enhance children's mathe- matical learning further outdoors and review the organisation of group activities so that children are challenged and remain fully en- gaged in their learning, the report concluded.
