Sports hall plan on playing field

OAKWOOD Park Grammar School has applied to build a sports hall on part of its playing fields. The building, which would be

10m high and contain 690sqm of floorspace – would be compliant with Sports England and be made available for groups out of school hours. The school says its existing

sports pitches “at the remote fields to the north east” will continue to provide outdoor space for football, rugby, cricket, rounders and ath- letics. The tennis courts would be retained. The current sports hall has a us-

able area of 227sqm – considered undersized for a pupil roll of 1,020. A supporting statement said:

“The schoolwas built in 1958 to ac- commodate 577 students but now has almost double that figure. However, it still uses the same original sports facilities. “The school hall is used to de-

liver the physical education cur- riculum but it is also used as a

dining hall, assembly hall, sixth- form study area, lecture theatre and indoor play space during breaks. “The non-regulation size gymna-

sium prevents certain curriculum PE subjects including badminton and volleyball. There is no suitable provision for female sports due to insufficient changing and facili- ties.” The planning application raised

an objection from a neighbour, who wrote: “I would have a large building blocking my nice view from my kitchen window. “When I purchased my flat

which overlooks the green field I was not overlooked, and that was one of the reasons I chose to live here. “People using the planned out-

door football pitch would be con- stantly kicking a ball accidentally over the fence into the grounds of Pine Lodge and it would be a con- stant nuisance to residents, aswell as our windows being broken by a ball being kicked over the fence.”

Trees face axe EIGHT leylandii and a laurel tree could be felled at 4 Upper Cris- brook Cottages, Cave Hill, Tovil. A conservation area application

says: “They are blocking the sun- light to my garden and the valley beyond significantly; shading to my garden has increased dramati- cally over the past 10 years. “The leylandii and laurel have in- creasingly exposed roots; I amcon- cerned they may be blown down.” Maidstone Council will decide.

Salon scheme A HAIRDRESSERS and beauty salon is to be established at a for- mer maisonette in Tovil. Maidstone Council granted plan-
