lights must go SIX illegal floodlights around a sand school at an East Malling stables should be removed because of their impact on the surrounding country- side, Tonbridge and Malling coun- cillorswere told. Planning officer RichardEdmonds
said the lights, which are on 3m columns at Orchard Farm, Well Street, had been erected without planning permission and intruded on the rural landscape . “Further- more, insensitive artifical lighting can have a harmful impact on the appearance of the countryside and the sky at night,” he said. His report said that itwas possible
for angled lights to be used for equestrian facilities to concentrate light and avoid any light spill. But the way in which these lights were install did not allow this. The lights consisted of metal poles attached to the fencing of the sand school with a small headlamp attached at the top. The owner had indicated that he intended to remove the floodlights by the end of March. However, councillors were asked to endorse the serving of an enforcement notice should the work not be done by March 31.
Councillors were due to consider
the matter on March 19, after the Downs Mailwent to press.
Burger van takes to the road to find new pitch
BURGER van man Lee Blundell might have lost the battle – but ap- pears to have won thewar. The Crown Estate, which man-
ages the South Aylesford retail park at Quarry Wood, gave 51-year old Lee his marching orders – and told him to move his mobile snack van ‘Dine Fast’ away from their land. With a new Costa Coffee fran-
chise in place and anM&Sfoodhall and café due to open in March, the operators felt it was time for Lee and his fast food to make a swift exit.
More than 2,000 customers signed a petition asking that his business Dine Fast remain on site, but the landlords stood firm and in February this year, Lee closed his snack van and hit the road. But it’s business as usual just around the corner now, after Ton- bridge and Malling council said it was fine for him to park the van on the road behind the shops and car park.
After checking with the licensing, health and highways departments,
the council gave Lee its blessing. So although Lee cannot put out
the tables and chairs he had before, his customers are once more enjoy- ing the sandwiches, rolls and hot food he has been serving them for the past 23 years. It is the third time Lee has had to
fight to keep his business afloat. More than 3,000 people backed his bid to stay in 2006, only to find he had another battle on his hands two years later. Mr Blundell said: “We have built
up a business and reputation here over the years so it’s good that we have only had to move a few hun- dred yards. The support we re-

tigate a claim we were causing an obstruction, butwe are only parked alongside the other vehicles and not causing any obstruction on the road or the pavement.” Samantha Ross, senior asset man-
ager at The Crown Estate, said: “We are looking to improve the customer experience, which in- cludes improving both the retail and leisure offer, along with in- vesting in the overall environment of the scheme to make it a more at- tractive destination for visitors.”
