Unlicensed boat owners are fined

TWO men have been ordered to pay a combined amount of more than £1,150 for having their boats on the River Medway without valid registrations.

Gordon Marshall, of College Av- enue, Maidstone pleaded guilty at Maidstone Magistrates Court and was fined £115 with costs of £115, a compensation order of £291 and vic- tim surcharge of £20 as his vessel Carleys Pride was used without a valid licence. The vessel was seen on the river at the rear of College Avenue without a valid registration displayed. Environment Agency records

showed Mr Marshall had submitted his registration application but had failed to provide payment or a com- pliant boat safety certificate. A reminder was sent to Mr Mar- shall in July 2014 but no registration or fees were received.

Lyndsay Beadle, from Gilling- ham, also pleaded guilty and was fined £135 with costs of £115, a com-

pensation order of £340 and victim surcharge of £20 after failing to apply for a boat registration. His vessel Fortuna was seen at The Riverside Moorings, upstream of Allington Lock, in June last year, without a valid registration certifi- cate. Mr Beadle was informed he needed to comply with the Envi- ronment Agency’s boat registration requirements, but failed to do so. Rebecca Cox, Environment Agency waterways officer said: “The revenue we receive from ves- sel licensing is essential. Without it, we are unable to complete mainte- nance such as lock repairs and dredging, and providing facilities like moorings, toilets and showers. “By not complying, the revenue is lost, threatening the future of this great waterway.” The Environment Agency carries out regular patrols on the River Medway, so owners of boats not displaying valid registration plates could face prosecution.

Travelodge rust to be cleaned

WORK is to be carried out to re- move unsightly rust on the Trav- elodge hotel in Maidstone. Agreement has been reached with the owner of the building, described as an eyesore, after protracted ef- forts by Lib Dem Cllr Dan Daley. It has taken since July last year to track down the pension fund which owns the building and has now au- thorised the work.

Cllr Daley said: “It has been an ex-

tremely complicated process; at one point the owners were looking to sue the builders, but they went bankrupt. The pension fund and land agent now agree the money should be spent sorting the situation out, rather than on legal fees.” Tenders are being considered to remedy the rust on the girders that were fitted as part of the building’s design. Cllr Daley understood work would start soon and take 12 weeks.
