weekends. The programme covers personal challenge where the teams overcome fears, create friendships and build confidence through intense outdoor activities. They also get the opportunity to carry out a sponsored activity to raise funds for a local charity and design a community campaign on a local issue they care about. They also work with a charity partner, visit a professional workplace, and pitch to a panel of ‘Dragons’ for project funding. Team Challenge is where young people return to the community to learn a new skill such as media, photography, music or sport. This culminates in the final part of the programme where teams reunite and carry out their sponsorship and campaign projects, take part in a practical project alongside their charity partner and join a large scale social action day.
The young people in their teams from all areas come back together to celebrate their achievements and graduate from National Citizen Service, which was done at Cosford after the completion of clearing the allotments.
Jean Hartshorne Community Development Office said ‘The young people truly are a huge inspiration and credit to their parents and carers. They worked relentlessly throughout the day and have made a huge difference to the allotments, which in effect will provide a project that will give the opportunity
for service personnel and their families to experience growing their own vegetables’.
On the day, the young people were split into 5 groups and allocated an area on the allotment to clear and within an hour
they had filled an 8 yard skip! The work continued at a steady pace throughout the day where they made a significant difference to the vast space. The allotments are now ready for families to start using the plots for them to grow their own produce.
