These children – and the people – of Sierra Leone are truly amazing. They are kind hearted, caring and optimistic, despite what they must continue to face on a daily basis, and they believe in helping each other through bad times. Indeed, post-civil war, the people of Sierra Leone appear to exemplify how integration between rebel fighters, the army and civilians can occur. Recently, a soldier told me that his brother used to be a rebel and fought against him. Now, he stated, they are family and friends again; they
joke about the times when they fought each other. “We, as brothers,” he said, “realised that we were only destroying ourselves.”
The continuing increase in EVD cases is still a risk which we must work to prevent. To date, within a population of about six million, approximately 1500 have died from EVD, with the number of cases now estimated to be at 6,802 within Sierra Leone1.
We therefore continue to help Sierra Leone fight this deadly disease in order to save the lives of so many innocent families. Meanwhile,
on a personal level, and in line with UK medical direction, I am taking all possible measures to prevent contracting the disease. I am led by the inspiration provided daily by the brave local people, who live a much harder way of life than I have ever witnessed or experienced. With this inspiration in mind, the entire team work night and day to continue to try and defeat Ebola and succeed with the humanitarian mission. Today, we stand together to combat EVD.
