FAMILY RAF ASSOCIATION –

SUPPORTS SERVING PERSONNEL TOO There is a misconception out there that the RAF Association is in place purely for RAF

Veterans when in fact, it’s very much there for Serving Personnel and their families too. Media and PR Manager, Emma Read shares with us a few examples…

T

here are many ways in which the RAF Association supports the whole RAF family. An important part of this family is

you, serving RAF personnel.

Here we highlight some of the support specifically provided for you and your family, while you are serving and when you make the transition into civilian life.

A SUCCESS STORY

The Association has funded the refurbishment of more than 30 contact houses on stations,

allowing separated parents access to their children in a homely environment.

WO Walmsley said: “When you hit rock bottom, you need somewhere to take your children to when they visit and that’s what the contact house did for me. It’s an excellent facility.

“The RAF Association maintaining the contact houses is superb. To be able to go into a place which is clean and has everything you need, at your time of need, you can ask for nothing more.”

SOCIAL CLIMBERS Funding has been provided to maintain a new climbing wall at RAF Honington.

An SAC injured while training has been given a grant for gym membership to help him recover. Another SAC(T), medically discharged after sustaining injuries in Afghanistan, has been helped to buy a large tool kit to enable him to work as an aircraft mechanic at the Classic Air Force museum in Newquay.

HELPING TO REALISE SPORTING POTENTIAL

The Association helped an ex-Regiment gunner in his bid to represent the UK at the 2014 Invictus Games, by contributing to archery equipment.

Storybook Wings has brought more than 2,500 parents home for bedtime with recorded stories and personal messages to your children. Whether deployed, away on a course or as a separated parent – this is a wonderful and personal service. Fun to do too!

These are just some of the many ways in which the RAF Association supports those who are serving or who have recently left the service. Rory O’Connor, Director of Welfare at RAF Association, said: “With a changing RAF landscape, including the recruitment of more RAF Reservists and the introduction of the New Employment Model, your Association is working hard to ensure it is relevant and best placed to meet the changing needs.”
