the company was welcomed with open arms into Torbay, they were in uproar. Wilton was the subject of satirical cartoons and comments in the press, which kept his lawyer very busy but he survived. he demonstrated he had not learnt his lesson two years later when he orchestrated the refusal of another company to gain access to the harbour. Then the First World War intervened. It was to be the making of mr Wilton in the eyes of the town. In the month war was declared, august 1914, mr Willton took on the role of mayor, a role he took very seriously.


The war took its toll on his business: he lost two


colliers, commandeered by the admiralty. When they were returned in 1915, he sold one, but saw the other blown up by a mine whilst sailing in the channel picking up coal for the town. One member of the crew was killed.


Whether this caused him to soften his hard, business-focused nature or whether he was good at pr, he seems to have changed during the war. he

offered coal at cost to all in the town, supported the local soup kitchen and started a fund for the training of soldiers. at the end of the war he gave four houses for returning servicemen in Dartmouth and in 1919 was returned as mayor for a fifth successive year. more significantly, he was awarded a knighthood for his services to the town and the war effort. sir Thomas


Wilton had completed his journey from upstart Geordie businessman famous for following his own interests, to genuine wartime hero. In 1922, having stepped back from his Dart interests,


and having moved to Dartmoor, he nearly lost everything when some investments went sour. he personally paid the losses of friends he had persuaded to invest as well. But it seemed impossible to keep the now sir Wilton


down: he started a new coaling company on the river Dart with his sons in 1925. But his seemingly endless energy was faltering and his health was failing: he died in 1929.•

To mark our 125 Anniversary we are offering: - The Academy Beginners Programme We provide all the equipment - you just bring your sense of humour! The programme consists of 7 hours of group tuition with our PGA Professional for £35 which takes a beginner through all aspects of playing golf finishing with playing a couple of holes. Once you have completed the course, you can purchase 6 complete rounds of golf and full use of the Clubhouse facilities for £50 to further assess your aptitude for the game and help you decide if membership is right for you.


If you are already an occasional golfer, we have made available 25 Fairway Memberships for 12 months working out at £6.25 per week; these are pay and play memberships with a smaller upfront cost and a reduced green fee when you play. For the more established golfer we have a fantastic golf club with a beautiful course and we have made available for a limited time 25 Full Playing Memberships for 12 months working out at £15.48 per week. This offer includes 2 free half hour lessons with further tuition at a reduced rate.
