Phone is more computer than mobile. Many people believe that they are not susceptible to viruses, spyware and malware on these devices but this is not the case. As Smart Phones and Tablets have become more popular, an increasing number of potentially harmful apps have appeared. How are they Caught? You are most likely to catch a virus from downloading from a website that has been infected or by downloading apps from the App Store that are infected. There are thousands of “third party” apps available and some will contain malicious software. Install an Anti Virus Programme There are a number of free anti virus programmes available for Smart Phones and Tablets. AVG and Kaspersky offer a good free protection package. Simply go to the Android Play Store and search for “anti virus”. They are quick and easy to install. If you have an iPhone or iPad, search the Apple store. Do Apple Devices Really Get Viruses? You are far less likely to catch a virus on an iPhone or iPad than a device running Android. This is because Apple has extremely good built in safeguards against malware and they keep a tighter control over the apps that are

available for download. Basic protection is free however so it’s worth installing an anti virus app anyway. The Common Sense Approach As always, be careful about what you download. Be vigilant against fake stores when you are downloading apps – they are becoming increasingly prevalent. If you are installing a mobile banking app, make sure the app is published by your bank. Finally, if you connect your Smart Phone or Tablet to your computer, ensure you have a good Internet Security package installed on the PC to protect you.
It’s worth remembering that you are far more likely to catch a virus on a traditional computer than a Smart Phone. However, protection is quick and easy to install and often free. Like all good software, you will get far more protection if you pay for it, so it’s worth considering upgrading to a full package.
