Foodie goings-on in dartmouth Food & Drink

After the winter months it’s lovely to see Dartmouth stretching and waking up for the spring – flowers out in royal avenue Gardens, the smell of fresh paint from smartening up shop fronts and more visitors coming to the town. some things remain constant on the business front and others have new owners with new ideas and enthusiasms. We have put together a round-up of a few of the foodie goings-on so you can see what’s happening in Dartmouth and a little further afield.
Smith St Deli is now under the ownership of paul Greenfield and alan price, formerly of signature but not new to catering and the food business as they used to own and run the embankment restaurant. Great fans of the deli, when the opportunity came to buy it, they snapped it up from previous owners simon entwhistle and marcelle chownes-Dove. says paul “We are loving working in the Deli. It’s been a busy time since we took over and it’s been lovely seeing so many locals dropping in for a coffee and buying deli produce. We have added a couple more tables and moved things round while keeping the same rustic feel to this lovely 500 year old building in which we are lucky enough to be work!” since arriving at the Deli at Dartmouth in Duke Street, sally has rearranged the lay-out and had a makeover in a styish dark blue. lunch sales are brisk with homemade soups and sandwiches favourites with many. Former owners of Dukes Deli as it was called, andy and rachel, are travelling and working their way round the world and we bumped into them completely by chance in a hotel and olive farm in the middle of nowhere in andalucia, southern spain – small world!!
rayne and Kevin continue to be busy with the Picnic Boat and the Dart to Mouth Deli with their outside seating a popular place for an alfresco coffee – especially now their heater is in situ! The picnic boat’s first cruise of the season is on 7th
march and will be
cruising the river with guests enjoying breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea and supper. Their new base for this year will be the Dart marina hotel. The Dart to mouth Deli’s
retail area is being refurbished so will be reopening on 7th march as well with lots of local lines including Devonshire loose tea and the full range of the lovely locally made Delish savoury crackers.” next door to them, Mark Lobb has finally opened his permanent fish shop after years of having a stall in the market – no more building and collapsing the stall and a second fish shop for Dartmouth when so many towns have lost theirs completely. mark is also working with Julie Graham who was at the avon mill Deli and is now creating very popular fish pies, frittatas, chowders, taramasalatas and patés for sale using mark’s fish sourced from Brixham Fish market.
The Singing Kettle in Smith street has reopened with new owners Oliver and Kate; as well as continuing with luscious lunches and afternoon teas, they now have a private dining room available for hire for groups for functions and dinners.
Talking of new venues, Rockfish
on the south embankment has been building into the roof space to create a mezzanine area, seating around 30 and overlooking the lower restaurant. For those who enjoy dining al fresco, (and who doesn’t?) there will be a small but sunny outdoor area upstairs for 6-8 people. can’t wait to see the conversion. They are also opening a rockfish in Brixham
right at the fish quay and have won the top award
for The Best multiple and community contribution in the seafish Industry national fish and chip awards. Great news!
loads going on at Café Alf Resco as ever - they will be celebrating marmalade Week (1st
-8th march), with free toast
for people to try Kate’s homemade marmalades. Kate won a silver award last year in the International marmalade awards and is entering two more varieties this year, so fingers crossed for more success. The team will also be handing out coffee & flapjack to runners from the Delicious Dart Trail on their way to the finish in the Old market on 7th march, providing complimentary cake for mums on mother’s Day on 15th
march, celebrating their 21st birthday on 1st
april with cake & bubbly and marking the fifth respect the aged Day on Tuesday 14th octogenarians. phew!
april, with free breakfasts for all
