£7.3m guide price for historic country estate

THE Linton Estate is on the mar- ket for the first time in 50 years with a price tag of £7.3m. It is expected to attract plenty of interest, having changed hands just four times in its 285-year his- tory. The site – which is being sold in

15 lots, ranging from £325,000 to £1.1m – covers 327 acres of pas- ture, arable and woodland. An- other 18 acres contains the estate lake, cricket club, farm buildings and houses, including six cottages. Agent Strutt and Parker de- scribes the estate as enjoying a “high level of seclusion”, with stunning views over theWeald. The sales brochure says the es-

tate could appeal to the City set, describing it as a fine residential estate in a “convenient location, less than 40 miles from Canary Wharf”. The main mansion, Linton House, is not included in the sale. It is currently used as office space after the estate was divided and sold in the 1960s.

Cuckoo Field House is one of the lots for sale, with a guide price of £1m Cricket club considers future

LINTONcricket club has been stirred in to action by news of the sale. The estate has been its home

ground for the past 150 years. While the club says the remaining

nine years on its lease will ensure it is not bowled out straight away, it will need to discuss its futurewith any new owner. If the park fails to sell as one lot,

the club is interested in buying the freehold of the ground – one of 15 lots that will be offered individually

raise £250,000. Club secretary Nigel Thirkell said

news of the sale “came out of the blue”. He said the possibility of buying the field had prompted the team to find out how the money might be raised through grant bodies including Sport England; a series of fundraising events is also set to be arranged.
