Work onwater main delayed

PROGRESS in the town centre to upgrade an old water main has been slower than expected. South East Water, which began digging upWeek Street on January 5, admits the discovery of large, un- derground concrete blocks and old utility services has caused delays. In the first twoweeks of the proj-

ect, Chris Love, the authority’s de- livery manager, said just 50 metres of pipe had been installed. He added: “Despite having checked historic utility records for the area and digging exploratory holes,we can never be 100% sure of what awaits us. In shopping areas such as thiswe do expect some sur- prises and plan for that, but on this occasion the surprises are causing us a few more early problems than anticipated.” He said there was some concern

that work in Earl Street – the sec- ond phase of the project – might not be completed on time, but

added: “Our contractor is working as hard and as safely as possibly to try and keep to schedule and re- cover any lost time.” Mr Love said businesses inWeek

Street and Earl Street would be kept informed of progress on the £155,000 project to replace 400 me- tres of pipe, which was scheduled for completion on April 3. Meanwhile, South East Water’s contractorswere progressing work to fit a new main to 83 properties in Stockbury, along the busy A249 be- tween Hayes Lane and Steps Hill Road. Drivers face lane closures and

speed restrictions until February 16 while the £240,000 project is com- pleted. The closure of Steps Hill Road for

a week from February 16 will be the final phase of the work, which had to be abandoned in January and again in September last year after causing traffic chaos.
