Caravan plans MORE caravans for gypsies could be established in Stilebridge Lane, Linton. Joe Smith has applied for two mobile homes, touring caravans, utility blocks, stables and an open paddock area at Stilebridge Pad- dock.
Mobile homes are already on the
land and Boughton Monchelsea Parish Council said the latest pro- posal would lead to an “over con- centration of sites ... which would cause material harm to the ... coun- tryside”. Its response added: “The utility
blocks are too big for the site and for the domestic use for which they are proposed.” Maidstone Council will decide.
Site objection STAPLEHURST Parish Council has objected to a plan for two caravans and a utility shed in Frittenden Road.
Thomas Smith’s application is for
land called Blossom in Maplehurst Lane. The parish council’s com- ment to Maidstone Council said: “Councillors were unhappy about the retrospective nature of the ap- plication and felt itwas incomplete. Maidstone Council will decide on the application.

Restored tithe map on display at church
AN HISTORIC map, dating back to the 1800s, has been restored for public enjoyment in Yalding Parish Church. The Yalding Tithe Map of 1841
details all the lands with the parish boundaries. Almost 1,200 tithe maps were produced within 20 years of the Tithe Commutation Act of 1836, which set out how tithes – one tenth of everything grown or reared by landowners – could be converted into money. Historically, there were three
such maps produced for each parish in England andWales – one kept in the parish, one lodged with the diocese and the third kept with the Tithe Commissioners (now held in the National Archives). Although all three of Yalding’s
maps are still in existence, in many parts of the country, some – or all – have been lost. The Yalding map has been on dis-
play at the back of St Peter and St Paul’s Church since the turn of the century, in a frame made by the

late Charles Fletcher of Kenward. The Yalding Church Preservation Society, founded 18 years ago when the church tower stairs were coming away from the main body of the church, has spent £1,800 on having the map carefully cleaned in the archives conservation unit at the Kent History and Library Cen- tre in Maidstone, and it is now back in place for visitors to see. It’s a far cry from the previous restoration in 1899, which cost £3 15s 6d! (about £3.77).
YCPS trustee Alison Cresswell, a former archivist with KCC, will lead volunteers for the next few months on drawing up a key of who owned the various lands in the parish. She said: “When I worked for
KCC, I had to examine lots of parish records and became very much aware of how much money parishes had paid over the years to maintain their churches and keep them going for the benefit of the community.”
