downsmail.co.uk Parking need
‘miscalculated’ THE Kent Institute of Medicine and Surgery (Kims) has admitted it got its sums wrong and massively un- derestimated how many parking spaces it would need. Kims has 143 parking spaces north
of the Newnham Court Shopping Village, Bearsted Road, Weavering for its 188 staff, but it says its initial assessment did not take account of shift work, so applied to increase on- site parking by 148 spaces, which Maidstone Council has accepted. A delegated officer report said:
“An increase in the car parking pro- vision for use by hospital staff would discourage the use of the park and ride facility nearby. However, shift patterns and the distance to the park and ride is inconveniencing the staff and potentially impacting on the op- eration of the hospital.”
Heart treatment
ANOTHER first for Kims is the in- troduction of electro-physiology as a treatment to correct arrhythmias or irregular heart rhythms. Dr Edward Roland and Professor Richard Chilling are among a team of consultants offering this treat- ment, originally developed by Dr Phyllis Holt when she was in prac- tice at Guy’s Hospital, London.

and I’ve never known pain like it. I didn’t sleep for weeks and didn’t want to see anyone, I felt so ill. Therewere times when I thought I was going to die.” Although Cllr Collins saw some
minor improvements, by Decem- ber, hewas still suffering from lack of sleep and acute discomfort. He said: “I did not seem to be im- proving to the extent I would have thought.” He asked his GP to refer him to
spinal pain specialist Dr Anthony Hammond at Kims. “I thought I would be sent home
with steroids or something. In- stead, Dr Hammond was con- cerned that the source of my infection had never been explored or discussed and sent me for ultra- sound and nuclear scans.” These revealed an infection in
the vertebrae of the spine, which could be treated with a lengthy course of antibiotics. After a month, Cllr Collins has seen some improvement and hopes soon to be clear of infection. The scans also revealed benign “lumps and bumps”, none of

this facility in Maidstone – and something which is also open to NHS patients. “It is a one-stop shop for every-
thing health-related and second to none with regard to its facilities and technology.”
