Homes tribute towar hero

THE family of aWorldWar One flying ace was invited to open a housing development inMarden. Captain Sidney Highwood’s family un-

veiled the tribute to the RAF pilot on the Redrow estate which takes his name. Mr Highwood (right) was raised in Mar-

den, and earned the Distinguished Flying Cross and Bar for his service during the war. Redrow’s managing directore Chris Lilley

said: “Thanks to his role in securing aerial victories over enemy observation balloons during the FirstWorldWar, Captain Sidney Highwood was known as a ‘balloon buster’. He was a true hero. “Sidney’s family and the people of Mar-

den must be immensely proud of him. Naming our development Highwood Green, in Sidney’s memory, is our way of acknowledging what he and his comrades did for their country.” Highwood Green is a development of family homes on the site of the former Marden Apple Packers (MAP) depot off Goudhurst Road.

Call to cut speed limit near school

NURSERY school children have played a key role in highlighting the dangers of speeding traffic on rural roads. Helen Grant, MP for Maidstone

and the Weald, took her stop- speeding campaign to County Hall, supported by the children, parents, residents and parish, borough and county councillors. More than 1,000 people had signed petitions urging KCC to tackle the issue of speeding be- tween East and West Farleigh, which passes St Helen’s Montessori School on Lower Road. Residents want the current 50mph limit reduced to 40mph and the 40mph brought down to 30mph on the B2010 and B2163 between East Farleigh through West Far- leigh to the top of Yalding Hill, with the introduction of a lower limit outside the school. Mrs Grant met KCC’s cabinet member for highways, David Bra- zier, who agreed to investigate the issue as a matter of urgency and will report back to the MP. Mrs Grant said: “Our petitions reflect the voices of more than

1,000 people and cannot be ig- nored.

“Speeds of 50mph past a school teaching two- to 11-years-olds is simply not acceptable. “KCC, in consultation with the police, must heed the implicit warning within this petition and implement the suggested changes to speed limits as quickly as possi- ble.” In the past six months there have

been three serious accidents within 100m of St Helen’s School, where the current limit is 50mph. In June, an elderly man had to be cut from his car after a serious collision.
