Fears for future of police

MAINTAINING visible commu- nity policing is becoming increas- ingly difficult, as police forces throughout the country face con- tinuing cuts. Hard decisions will have to be

made in the coming years, accord- ing to Kent Police and Crime Com- missioner Ann Barnes. Kent Police is likely to have to

make savings of at least £14.5m in 2014-15, but Mrs Barnes said: “It is not just this coming year that wor- ries me but the years after that. “The force is already stretched

very tightly yet is managing to maintain the visible community policing that people want. “But this position is not sustain-

able over the next three to four years, whenwe predictwe shall be asked to make another £46m in

savings. “We shall have to make some difficult decisions, but before that I feel thatwe desperately need a na- tional debate to decide what the publicwant from their police force and how much and how they are prepared to pay for it. “No one in Kent tells me they

want fewer police officers or PCSOs on our streets, but that will be the stark reality. You cannot employ people if you can’t pay them.” Government funding to all

forces is being cut by 5.1%. The remainder of the police budget is met from the policing el- ement of the council tax – and the Government says this can only be raised by 1.99% for next year.
