Where I live...

West Malling Parish Council These are just a few of the discussions that took place during the November and December 2014 at West Malling Parish Council meetings.

High Street gas main replacement While the work on replacing the High Street gas main finished well ahead of schedule, parish councillors were dismayed when told that KCC Highways had blocked further work on the gas main in Swan Street and Police Station Road for the time being. While councillors appreciate that the work will cause some disruption, they are actively seeking a meeting with Kent Highways to encourage it to reassess their proposed dates of February/March for Police Station Road and June/July for Swan Street.

Winter safety A reminder that although daylight hours are gradually increasing, the darker evenings can make it obvious when a house is unoccupied. Use timers to switch on lights and radios (check the volume level!) to give the impression that someone is home. And remember to talk to our local PCSO, Phillip Harrison, if you spot someone or something that doesn’t seem quite right. He’s here to help our community stay crime- free.

Tonbridge and Malling Crime Prevention Panel The crime prevention panel is a group of representatives from parishes and community groups in the Tonbridge and Malling area who meet on a quarterly basis. At November’s meeting, Police Sergeant Mark Ginsberg gave a summary of crime statistics for the borough. Over the past four years, reported crimes have remained at about 4,900 annually with 2014 showing a slight drop in most parishes, including West Malling. Sergeant Ginsberg gave details of Operation Castle. This encourages security marking and logging details of property and personal items, such as mobile phones and credit cards, on a safe, secure, centralised data base. Nearly 29 million items have already been registered and if the worst does happen, the police can quickly and positively identify recovered property and return

Plans under way for next festival

Music@Malling which stages inspirational classical music and jazz concerts in the West Malling area - featuring London- based professional players - has announced that it is going ahead with another festival this year.

The fifth festival will run from September 25 to 27 with school workshops in the preceding weeks.

More than 800 children enjoyed the four schools concerts in

West Malling, working with English National Ballet and the festival's resident ensemble, Chamber Domaine.

Festival director Thomas Kemp said: “"It was a thumping success . Many of the children have taken up playing an instrument as a result of our team of professionals visiting local schools and helping teachers to set up ensembles. All of this would not be possible without generous sponsorship, and we would like to thank the Sound Hub and other sponsors such as the KCC, Tonbridge and Malling District Council, the Malling Institute, West Malling Parish Council the Rotary Club

of Malling, the Lions, Brookside Coaches and other local firms, organisations and individuals who sponsored us. Without sponsorship - as in the arts generally - it would be impossible to stage such events. So we are already fundraising for 2015!"

West Malling Christmas Festival was held on Sunday, November 30, when the Christmas lights were switched on. The local shops did brisk business, as did the large number of stalls selling Christmas goods, food and drink from restaurants in the High Street and Swan Street, the ice rink, the merry-go-round and the cup and saucer ride. With so much to see and do, the event was a great success and very popular with residents and visitors alike. Special thanks went to the Chamber of Commerce for working very hard on the arrangements to make it such a success.

Malling Society As part of their 50th anniversary celebrations in 2015, the society wants to hear from past members and anyone who was a founding member in 1965. Further details of the society’s events in 2015, as well as opening dates for The Twitch Heritage Society at Douces Manor and the venues celebrating the Heritage Weekend in September 2015, are available on the website www.themallingsociety.org.uk

West Malling Village Hall continues to be a very popular venue for parties, weddings, meetings and other events. Having already gained Hallmark level 2 in the summer, the committee intends to take the final steps towards achieving level 3 and join the other half a dozen halls in Kent who have gained this award. Check their website on www.westmalling-villagehall.co.uk Farmers’ market Just a reminder that the farmers market in the High Street is held on the fourth Sunday monthly and that any changes are listed on their website. And finally please note that parish councillors can be contacted via the parish clerk’s office on 01732 870872 during office hours. Or you will be very welcome at the next monthly meeting on Monday, February 2, 2015 at 7.30pm in the Village Hall, Norman Road, West Malling.
