STN EXPO Attendee Uses Online Game for Valuable Training
“IT’S THE BEST CONFERENCE AROUND, THERE’S NO DOUBT
ABOUT THAT ONE,” SAID KATHY POTTS, TRANSPORTATION COORDINATOR FOR SOUTH CENTRAL COMMUNITY ACTION PROGRAM HEAD START IN MONROE, IND. Potts was randomly selected this spring from more than 1,000
players as the winner of the inaugural STN EXPO Game and, with it, an all-expenses paid trip to Reno, Nev., to attend the 17th North American School Bus EXPO Conference and Trade Show presented by School Transportation News. With it, Potts received complimentary conference and pre-conference registra- tion and $100 spending cash. She has worked at SCCAP Head Start for the past 28 years, all
in transportation for the agency’s low-income preschoolers. Te program transports 267 children who take advantage of federal Head Start and Early Head Start program activity trips. About half those students also rely on the school bus for regular route
service. She oversees approximately 14 drivers and monitors on seven school buses. “We do all of our training in-house. It provides a lot of the
training and is assisted by drivers and monitors,” she added. “It’s definitely a team effort. [So] what I learn, they get to learn.” Potts has been a regular STN EXPO attendee until the last
couple of years, when SCCAP was hit hard by budget cuts. Even with a myriad of challenges, both budgetary and compliance- related, she said she has seen Head Start head in a generally positive direction. “Tanks to conferences like this there’s more guidance,” she
added. “I don’t think we get the guidance we need from the fed- eral government, but conferences like this are excellent for the Head Start community because [of the topics] they really focus on. Tis is something that has been needed for years so we can all go in the same direction. We all have the same goal.” n
