Zonar Systems is partnering with the
National Renewable Energy Laboratory to obtain and use drive cycle data to develop hybrid, plug-in hybrid electric and battery electric school buses. Te Department of Energy’s Vehicle Technology Program funds NREL’s research on HEV, PHEV and BEV school buses, which the feds say can produce lower tailpipe emissions and lower fuel costs for school bus operators. A goal of the program is to also develop appropriate batteries that are connected to the grid using bi-directional chargers to create potential revenue for school dis- tricts when the buses are plugged in.

for Pupil Transportation held its annual conference in late June in Great Falls. Te conference was attended by nearly 400 drivers, aides, contractors and other industry members. State Director Maxine Mougeot, who is an STN EXPO regular, said she was given the “great honor” of being chosen as the MAPT Transportation Per- son of the Year. Te Montana Highway Patrol Driver of the Year was presented to Robert D. Sackman, a 43-year-veteran of
student transportation.

Charles L. Lucero of Big Sky Bus Lines in Great Falls was selected as the MHP Transportation Aide of the Year. Te conference also included a bus road-e-o, which featured 100 participants. At the
same time, a fitness class required drivers to drag 120 pounds of sand for 40 feet, open exit doors and enter and exit the bus as quickly as possible.
