STN EXPO has come and gone. Tere were workshops that reinvented the wheel, speeches that left attendees with a new mission and some tears in their eyes. Tere was also an overall feeling that the industry is stronger and more prepared to face any curve balls that may come its way. If two words could sum up the entire conference, they were spoken by keynote
speaker John Walsh, sponsored by Blue Bird Corporation and Bus-Watch by REI. A well-known catchphrase for the sometimes controversial and always engaging “America’s Most Wanted” host, “saddle up” not only spoke to the mission of pro- tecting children from the same kind of monsters that abducted and killed his son Adam 29 years ago, it also described what the industry as a whole must do before it realizes any of the changes that will help it move forward. Towards the end of his moving speech, which caused more than one emotional reaction, Walsh called on the attendees to contact their local legislators on both the state and federal levels and stress the need to pass laws that would mandate the collection of DNA samples from people convicted of felonies or misdemeanors, samples that could help law enforcement solve both past and future investigations. But the conference didn’t start or end with Walsh, though many considered it one of the high points of their experience.
