Pennsylvania School Bus Driver Makes Case as Best During International Safety Competition
Larry Hannon chalks it all up to luck, proving sometimes that
it is better than being good when it comes to winning the School Bus Driver International Safety Competition. But in reality, his feat and track record is due much more to skill. Te 34-year veteran driver from Centennial School District in
Warminster, Pa., took home his seventh championship as 109 par- ticipants from 34 states and one Canadian province competed in late July in St. Louis. Te International Safety Competition took place just prior to the National School Transportation Associa- tion Annual Convention. It was Hannon’s record-setting seventh event championship in the 28 years he’s been competing. “I work on it, I practice and I read the material,” explained
Hannon last month. “And I think you have to have good depth perception, that type of thing, and to be able to totally con- centrate on each event. If you foul up a little bit in one [driving event], to forget about that one and just concentrate on what the next one is going to be. A lot of people get rattled.” What makes his feat even more astonishing is that Hannon
only drives one route a day, in the morning, when he admits the kids are better behaved. He works full time at a local auto body shop and has done so every day after his school bus route since 1981. He said he got his start in school buses as a sub for Centennial in 1976 while enrolled at Bucks County Community College. “When I got the job at the
shop, I wanted to see if I still could drive the bus in the morning,” he said. “I just go in a little bit later than everyone else, and then I stay. It kind of helps the shop because the shop is open a little bit later, too.” n

The New 39” Student Safety Seat
A moveable center buckle adjusts to fi t up to three passengers, regardless of their heights. It’s single frame construction allows the seat to be the same thickness as a standard seat yet, fi t 3 students, resulting in zero loss of occupancy.
