Second Keynote Hits Home John D. Musso, executive director for Association

of School Business Officials International, addressed attendees during the Tuesday morning breakfast spon- sored by Tomas Buil Buses with a message on how the simplest actions can have everlasting effects. Af- ter learning about a life-threatening heart condition, Musso found a surgeon who was able to perform the difficult surgery. After the surgery, Musso’s life was saved when the assistant who was left to finish clos- ing up his chest and he began hemorrhaging, someone who made it through a trying childhood with the help of his bus driver. Tis simple act of friendship helped create Musso’s savior, one of only a few doctors that could actually perform the necessary surgery. Tis point was driven home by the example of another life saver, a member of President Ronald Reagan’s security detail who helped protect the leader of the free wolrd during an assassination attempt on March 30, 1981. He would have never been there in the first place if a school bus mechanic hadn’t decided to take a few extra minutes to fix faulty school bus brakes prior to a high

school football game some 40 years ago. “Tings happen for a reason,” chimed Musso, who

also stressed a principle of Mohandas Gandhi: “You must be the change you wish to see in the world.” In all, the STN EXPO Conference featured more than

45 workshops and a half dozen general sessions. But the learning wasn’t confined to the classroom. Te nearly 600 STN attendees made their way to the two trade show halls in the Grand Sierra Resorts to speak with represen- tatives and receive product demonstrations from the 120 vendor companies in attendance. Te six-hour trade show took place on July 27. Te following day the confer- ence concluded with several workshops such as “Lessons from a Head Start Bus Crash,” “Effectively Participating in the IEP Meeting,” “Legal issues for Head Start,” and “Driver Risk Reduction: It’s all About Attitude.” Bob Riley, executive director of NASDPTS, also pre-
