BOOK REVIEW School Bus Safety Handbook Authors: Deborah Stewart, Linda White and Mary Anderson

Published by Safe Ride News Publications | www.saferidenews.com | $24.95 “Te School Bus Safety Handbook” was written by child passenger safety technicians/

instructors and is a technical manual that provides valuable and in-depth information for school transportation personnel as well as child passenger safety technicians. It is an excel- lent resource for building the partnership between the two.

Tis handbook provides clear descrip-

tions of the selection, installation and use of CSRS in the school bus and the illustrations are excellent throughout. Te tables and checklists make for easy reference for each step of choosing and using CSRS and wheel- chairs in school buses. It provides valuable information to transportation directors/ supervisors, driver trainers, monitors and technicians to understand the complexi- ties of child safety restraint systems and can give a clear picture of the unique challenges transporters have when securing child safe- ty restraint systems as well as wheelchairs. Part II is the training component that

provides an understanding of the basic fundamentals of working with various types of CSRS. Tis section will help driver trainers focus on clear, concise, step-by- step installation of the CSRS as well as securing a child in it. A very important component of Part II is the section “Emer- gency Evacuation: CPS Aspects for Drivers, Aides, and Monitors.” It points out that evacuation methods

for each type of

school bus and an individual child’s needs. It gives an itemized list of things a driver and monitor need to know before they write their emergency evacuation plan. Tis handbook is compatible and sup-

portive of the 2008 curriculum on child safety restraints on school buses devel- oped by NHTSA. It serves as a concise reference to the curriculum and also add- ed current product information and how they are used. Te authors of this hand- book met their goal of providing a brief, clear description of the selection, installa- tion, and use in school buses of products available for protecting infants, toddlers and preschool-aged bus passengers and those with special needs.
