information. With technology, weather information is virtually everywhere — the Internet, iPhones, local television and numer- ous Web sites with customizable forecasting. While giving fast information, general weather outlets don’t


pinpoint the most dangerous areas during a weather emergency. School transportation needs more guidance, because its main


goal is to keep children safe. And there are plenty of additional resources available for more accurate forecasting and decision- making. Both the National Weather Service (NWS) and technol- ogy providers offer solutions. Te NWS is a free public service from the federal government.

It provides all watches and warnings through 122 offices, which have been trusted predictors on local levels. Te NWS only goes so far for school transportation. It may not


consider 2 inches of rain or snow a major storm. If schools want greater weather detail for bus operations, they need to supple- ment NWS information with other services. Technology providers, such as ImpactWeather and Weather-


Bug, have their own meteorologists and systems to assist school districts that want deeper information. Tey include the NWS in their alerts, but both use additional resources and analysis for notifying paying clients. WeatherBug manages and operates a large weather station


network that continuously delivers and analyzes live weather in- formation for paying customers that have liability. “School transportation directors need to receive as much


warning as possible,” said Frank McCathran, director of Weath- erBug Education, Media and Club Safety. “We all know that improvements can be made to traditional
