THE DRIVE CONTINUES... Whether it was during Dr. Duane Dobbert’s pre-conference
workshop on identifying sexual predators, Lt. Gen. Russel Hon- oré’s keynote address the morning of July 27 or in any number of this year’s workshops, “preparedness” was a constant theme throughout the conference. Attendees from school districts all over the nation converged on Reno this past July to learn about what they can do to prepare for worst-case scenarios, budgetary downfalls and how to prevent the unimaginable possibility that school buses could one day become a thing of the past.
Surviving the Future, the Danger Zone and the Predators Among Us “You have to be active on the local, state and national levels,”
emphasized Peter Lawrence, transportation director for Fairport, N.Y., Central School District, during the July 26 introductory gen- eral session on school bus survivability. “State associations need to lobby their legislatures — we need to advocate for ourselves.” Tis message of “being prepared” had already been echoed
throughout the EXPO’s newest additions in its pre-conference line-up: Dobbert’s “Understanding and Identifying Sexual Predators” and Dick Fischer’s “Understanding and Mini- mizing the Danger Zone.” “Te court will consider you an expert in pupil transportation,” announced Fischer during a quiz that opened more than one eye in the room to the possibility that attendees would walk away with a greater understanding of how to keep kids — and drivers — safer. “Te greatest danger you’ll ever have is the mile in front of you.” During Dobbert’s four-hour course, which also welcomed police officers and social workers from around the state of Nevada eligible for continuing ed- ucation units, attendees were hit with the reality that there are more than 600,000 registered sex offenders in the country, not including those that have either existed be- low law enforcement’s radar or were “lucky” enough to have
their initial sexual assault charges plea-bargained down to simple assault. Tat’s 1.25 predators per school bus on the nation’s roads. “We have to stop believing that sexual predators don’t exist,”
warned Dobbert. “I come to you terrified of these people who exploit our children.”
