HAT IS AUTOMATA? AN AUTOMATON IS, SIMPLY PUT, A MOVING MECHANICAL DEVICE IN IMITATION OF A HUMAN OR ANIMAL FIGURE. TWO OR MORE AUTOMATONS MAKE AUTOMATA.
The art of automata goes back many centuries. of Pierre Jaquet-Droz (the Writer) and Henri Maillardet (the Draughtsman-Writer). Their fascinating creations of exquisite art combined with precise mechanisms continue to astound were painted and dressed in period clothes, hiding intricate and delicate mechanisms to make them move. It is no wonder that the Swiss artists had superb watchmaker’s training and histories. Current automata geniuses are Keith Newstead and Henri Junod.
