PUBLIC ART CALLS Let’s try to get it together

The topic of non-standardized RFP’s and RFQ’s for public art calls is still a major point of irritation for many sculptors. There have been many comments on my blog about this.

My blog was a reprint from an article written in  think it needs to be widely circulated. Pass it along to the public art committee(s) you deal with, and to other sculptors ... just cut and paste, email, tweet, blog or whatever. Here are a few examples of the feedback I received:

WASTE OF ENERGY AND TIME! Assuming the desire of an RFP is to attract the  decision, you would think it would be in their best interest to make it straight forward, simple and easy to submit. Sadly it’s never been the case in my experience. The last one required I mail photos on a CD/R. The only place I found that still sold and stocked them was the local dollar store. At least it was better than sticking red dots and     into uniform processes which it is their jobs to invent. I have found that to be successful I must be very judicious in selecting the projects I submit to. You can waste incredible amounts of time, energy and money trying to jump through bureaucratic silly hoops.

EXELLENT IDEA Jock’s idea is excellent! The Royal British Society of Sculptors (which does accept applications from international artists) has been working hard to implement something similar. They have

certainly contacted commissioning bodies to ask for changes, for example when artists are asked to provide engineers reports at the initial stage, something that should not be needed until short listing. I think things will change but it takes time and while non artists are commissioning, then it will take a long time. They have no idea what is necessary and how much time is needed at each stage.  

MAD ANAL NIGHTMARE Answering public briefs here in the UK is also a mad anal nightmare, I have nothing more to say on it...other than I spend most of my life painting now, its easier , lighter, cheaper, less hassle and best of all, I don’t have to deal with imbeciles all day long! 

For a while there people were sticking with 1920 pixels on the longest side, dpi irrelevant, per CaFe, but now it’s all over the place again...must be more than 2 MB, less than 2 MG, etc etc. Resumes must be one page, or must include refs or refs separate, etc. Public Artist is another subscription service that stores images and documents, and will resize images automatically for each call. As you say, though, it remains to be seen whether it truly will save time. CaFE (callforentry.org), the creation of Westaf, the Western States Art Federation, is the grandmother of these services, and still the best, in my opinion. Many calls use their services-- if everyone did, I’d be ecstatic.
