‘The Friends of the Ebro’
campaign was introduced by Angling Spirit for the World Catfish Classic in 2011, where more than
50 tonnes of rubbish was cleared from the banks
of the river Ebro in Spain. Since then, ‘The Friends of’ has since been a
feature of all Angling Spirit events, conveying a clear
message to the world about environmental issues.
The World Carp Classic is a globally renowned competition with a very strong code of ethics, and as such, we endeavour to make a difference where possible. Environmental issues are fundamental
to our beliefs and with our ‘Friends of’ campaigns we strive to not only display a responsible attitude towards bankside cleanliness, we promote it in a way that will hopefully encourage others to act in a responsible manner also. Our previous campaigns have been successful, but it remains a sad fact that some anglers do not act responsibly and with the addition of other bankside visitors, it remains very clear that more work is required. Whereas it is impossible for us to
exercise any control over anglers outside of the event, during the event it is quite a different matter altogether and any competitor leaving litter in or around their swim will be dealt with in strict accordance with the set rules. We are very privileged
The River Ebro.. where it all began. The ‘Friends of’ campaign collected 50 tonnes of rubbish from the banks of the river
to be here at Lago di Bolsena, and, as you will see, the local people take great pride in the cleanliness of the bankside. We encourage you all to join us in our organised pre-event, ‘Friends Of Bolsena’ litter-picking walk around the banks to help put out a message to all those who feel it is acceptable to leave their rubbish behind when they depart.
Will you be a part of the problem, or a part of the solution? Every angler wants to arrive at the
lakeside to find nothing but footprints, so why do some see fit to leave their rubbish behind when they leave? It reflects very poorly on the sport when
rubbish is left and it has, in some instances outside of the event, brought about the complete cessation of angling altogether on a number of venues. It is simply not acceptable practice
to leave litter, and where the event is concerned, we will take the strongest action possible against offenders.
