Every year, both Head Marshal Andy and Ross strive to improve the competition by listening to you, the competitiors and learning from past

experience. As a result, this year will see some fairly big changes to the format, but one ethos still remains .... respect for others, the environment and the fish

that you agree between you and neighbouring competitors. You will find in Bolsena that in a lot of cases

the further out you go the poorer the fishing is, as either it is too deep and/or there is no weed. The carp are certainly attracted to the weed as this of course holds the natural food and finding where the weed ends at a certain depth can be a very good tactic. The marshals will again be armed with range finders and night vision equipment, so please keep within the distance otherwise you will run the risk of being yellow carded or possibly disqualified and thrown out of the competition.

Another new addition to the event this year is that there are no team runners. Instead, we have increased the number of anglers from two to three, if so required, and this should make life a lot easier for all concerned. I mentioned earlier about the boat check

and the safety equipment and this will of course include life jackets. With safety a major part of the event I cannot stress enough how important it is to wear a life jacket whenever you go out on the water. There are no excuses and whereas before a warning may have been given we have in recent years adopted the approach that a

yellow card will be awarded straight away, so again please take note. Now something else that is being trialled

this year that you may notice in the rules; I as Head Marshal have the discretion, if I feel it is warranted, to issue a no fishing penalty for a fixed period of time for a second ‘minor’ yellow card rather than issue a red card. This is only for minor yellow cards, and if my marshals or I come across any form of cheating then of course this will be an instant red card and removal from the competition. The marshal team in your section will visit

you twice daily whilst on the bank; they are there to assist you wherever possible so please treat them with respect. That also includes the lake and surrounding bankside and I am talking about rubbish and litter here. NO LITTER is to be left in your peg after the

competition. It is to be removed and placed in the designated rubbish areas dotted around the lake. I do not want a repeat of last year when

three teams thought it okay to leave a weeks’ worth of rubbish in their peg for someone else to come and clean up. Quite frankly they are not genuine anglers and any angler found leaving litter on their peg this year will be red

carded, refused entry into any further events and stripped of any prizes. So please keep your peg clean and tidy at all times. As well as respecting the marshals and the

environment I also want to see the greatest of respect and care given to every carp that you may be fortunate enough to catch during the competition. During the daytime it can be very hot, so please be aware of this when handling the carp. Keep them well watered at all times when out of the water and on the unhooking mat, being photographed, filmed etc., keep them out of the water for the absolute minimum of time and if necessary have pictures taken with them in the water. Also remember when retaining fish waiting to be weighed etc. and it is rough with big waves, makes sure the fish is retained in deep enough water so that it is not being unduly stressed. Well, these are just a few points that I have

picked on for this year but, as always, please read the rules in full and understand them. If we can all do this there will be no problems on the bank and you will be able to fish the competition as it should be fished. Enjoy the event and the lake and who knows you may even be the 2014 World Carp Classic champion. Good luck.
