upon opening one of the buckets he was greeted by the hideous sight of the biggest turd I have ever seen sat nestling in the middle of the bait…

A lifetime of friends: The event is always an occasion where good friends met and new friends are made, every year

.. a massive bang and the lake was peppered with sections of carbon ..

asking why I was testing in public at such a big event. As I said to him “what’s the big problem, it shows I test rods properly to destruction well before there is any chance of them being released and going into production, unlike some rod companies out there”. He had to agree, but I guess I should have done it in a less audacious place.

At the same event Danny Fairbrass, boss of Korda, partnered me. Dan had asked Mainline, our bait sponsor, to make us up some Active8 in 24mm boilies, which were in big white 10 kg buckets. These buckets were sat next to Dan’s

bivvy, which was situated in the middle of bivvy city. In the morning, after the big party, Danny decided to check the boilies and upon opening one of the buckets he

was greeted by the hideous sight of the biggest turd I have ever seen sat nestling in the middle of the bait… he recoiled in horror and was nearly sick. Despite our suspicions, the sabotage culprit was never found, not surprisingly. One other thing that sticks in my mind

is when we were fishing the mighty Orient. It was red hot, the fishing was slow and the young marshals were getting listless and bored, so I showed them how to make arrows that you fire with a piece of string. Now these arrows, if made properly, will fly over 150 meters and something that as kids we often made, long before the age of Xboxes and Playstations. The young marshals were amazed as I showed them how to make these arrows, and very soon they were all at it and we were having target practice aiming at a rubbish bag sat on a

tree stump at 100 meters range. I did a crack shot just as Ross Honey, along with the mayor and local dignitaries appeared in my swim and the arrow went right through the bag at massive speed. God only knows what they must have thought.

As you can see, there is never a dull moment in my life. All of this and more of my angling

exploits are recalled in my new book titled ‘Every bit of blue’ covering my 44 years as a carp angler. The book was available from the 19th of September 2014 from Angling Publications in the UK. I hope that you enjoy the stories and the laughs if you choose to get a copy. Good luck to you guys in this years World carp classic, see you next year.
