The ILSA Chapter at the University of Alabama School of Law is committed to planning its best year of programming yet. We started our year off with reaching out to new members at our law school’s “Get On Board Day.” Students expressed a great deal of interest and enthusiasm for the organization at this event, with over twenty-five students signing up to become ILSA members.
Next, we showed our support for international study by hosting a going-away party for Swiss exchange students studying at the University of Alabama School of Law. ILSA at Alabama has al- ways played a very active role in our law school’s foreign exchange programs. Alabama students have the opportunity to study abroad in the sum- mer at the University of Fribourg in Fribourg, Swit- zerland or at the Australian National University in Canberra, Australia. Swiss and Australian stu- dents, in turn, study at the University of Alabama in the fall and spring semesters respectively. UA Law’s ILSA Chapter showed its support for these programs by throwing a going-away party for the Swiss exchange students who studied in Tusca- loosa during August and September. Our Chapter will organize a similar event in February 2015 for the Australian exchange students that will arrive in Alabama after Christmas break. Alabama’s ILSA Chapter attempts to facilitate as much cultural
Additionally, each semester, ILSA at the University of Alabama brings in several speakers who are ex- perts in various areas of international law. At our first meeting of the year, three of UA Law’s fin- est international law professors spoke on a panel for students with questions about long-term ca- reer goals in international law. These professors are experts on a broad range of topics including international environmental law, international hu- man rights law, and international trade law. Each professor explained the wide range of possibili- ties available for careers in international law and offered advice on how to pursue such a career.
In October, the Associate Director of the Alabama International Trade Center will be speaking at our ILSA meeting. The Alabama International Trade Center is a nonprofit organization that provides international market research and strategic con- sulting for small and medium sized businesses in Alabama. The Center seeks to enhance economic growth by making Alabama small businesses more competitive through involvement in interna- tional trade. Throughout this school year, our chap- ter will bring in several more speakers practicing in other areas of international law. As always, our chapter strives to make our events practical, stu- dent-centered discussions that encourage ILSA membership and promote a passionate interest in international law.
