The Sturm College of Law International Law So- ciety (ILS) at the University of Denver has been busy this fall! We started our semester with a Hot Topic lunch, discussing the current turmoil in the Middle East involving ISIS. Speakers Profes- sor Nader Hashemi from the Korbel School of In- ternational Studies, Professor Arthur Gilbert from the Korbel School of International Studies, and Professor Robert Hazan from Metropolitan State University in Denver discussed options for an ef- fective response to the “Menace of the Islamic State.” The discussion touched on the history of the situation in Iraq and its political and reli- gious issues, in addition to the media portrayal of events occurring in the region.
Our group then hosted a talk on Sharia law and the possibility of legal and business ramifica- tions resulting from its growth. A great number of students came to this lunchtime event to hear Professor J. Robert Brown and Professor Nader Hashemi speak on the history and sources of Sharia law and the modern implications of Sharia law in Turkey.
The Sturm ILS group also organized a talk on the possibility Scottish independence entitled “New Statehood and the Law: The 2014 Scottish Ref- erendum.” This lunch was aimed at educating
students on the legal history of the relationship between Scotland and the UK. Appropriately, fish and chips were served. The talk was a suc- cess and featured three panelists, all of whom originated from the UK. The speakers discussed Scotland’s position in the European Union, pos- sible consequences regarding currency, and the source of Scottish Nationalism.
Our annual 1L Welcome Reception occurred this fall as we welcomed a new group of students into our school and introduced them to DU’s In- ternational Legal Studies Program. 1L students had the chance to meet other students that are interested in and involved with international law as well as listen to presentations by the Program Director of each area of Sturm’s specialization in International Law. Professor Nanda, as well as Ian Bird, the chairman of the Nanda Center board, each provided a short message, welcoming stu- dents and encouraging them in their pursuit of International Law as a field of study.
In addition, our Chapter received a high num- ber of applicants from the incoming 1L class expressing interest in joining the ILS board. We were able to narrow down the applicants and are excited to welcome ten new 1L Board Members to promote the mission and events of ILS to fel- low students. 1L Board Representatives are eli- gible to receive a position on the executive board for 2015-2016 school year.
We were also thrilled to host the Henry and Mary Bryan Lecture and Reception on Septem- ber 18, 2014, featuring Doug Jackson, President
