ILSA Chapter Happenings

These events have reminded us that, even though we are geographically tucked into the middle of the country, international law as a role to play in our lives and legal careers. Making international law accessible and relatable has helped our chap- ter grow in recent years.

WILS members are fortunate to enjoy a strong scholarly international law presence among our Professors. In particular, the Global Legal Stud- ies Program and Human Rights Program at the law school are an incredible opportunity for WILS members to meet with and learn from Professors who are experts in their fields and on compelling international law issues. The Global Legal Stud- ies Program works to promote the understand- ing of international, transnational, and compara- tive legal systems, processes and regimes and disseminate this knowledge to students and constituencies on and off campus. So far this se- mester we have heard lectures from Professors Sungjoon Cho and Lynette Chua, Professor Cho presented on the world trade regime, taking a sociological approach to understanding how the regime develops and interacts. Professor Chua spoke on the politics of human and sexual minor- ity rights movements, comparing Singapore and Myanmar.

We are excited to start this year off with a new board and new events in the works. This year, we have added a graduate student representative, in order to foster discussion between the graduate students in the law school and the J.D. students. To achieve these goals, we will host a casual WILS “happy hour” a more formal panel discussion, to learn more about the legal systems and educa- tions in different countries. Other fall events in- clude advising and informational sessions hosted by 2 and 3L students to help 1L students take advantage of opportunities to work abroad or in international law during the summer. Last sum- mer, WILS members interned in Thailand and Vietnam, studied abroad in Germany, and worked in immigration law. We are excited to help our

new members take advantage of these exciting opportunities. This year, given renewed interest in a WILS-sponsored moot court team, we hope to resume sending a team to the Inter-American Human Rights moot court competition.

Guided by a dedicated core of first year students, the chapter is currently focused on re-establish- ing itself by increasing membership and holding interesting and meaningful events on topics in the field of international law. The chapter held its first interest meeting early this semester, identi- fying students who are both interested in inter- national law and in helping to shape the future of our organization.

In the near future, the Chapter is planning on raising funds to provide for further opportunities through food and apparel sales within the law school. Additionally, Mizzou ILSA is lining up a guest lecture series, and hosting a film viewing and discussion on the court system in the West Bank. Additionally, we are planning a number of social events to develop camaraderie among the members of the group.

We look forward to working with other student organizations within Mizzou Law, as well as through the MU International Student.

We remain ambitious about the prospects that our group holds, and the opportunity to learn more about a variety of topics in international law, starting with a focus on international rela- tions and diplomacy. The Chapter also hopes to
