The 2nd Annual IBA-ILSA Conference
by Linda Amrou 2014-2015 ILSA Student President I
would like to take a moment to welcome all new ILSA members, greet returning ILSA constituents and also introduce myself. My name is Linda Amrou and I will be serving
as the ILSA Student President for the 2014-2015 academic year. This is a truly unique organization that offers fantastic benefits to those currently pursuing their legal education and beyond. I am honored to be able to serve and am looking for- ward to a successful year.
I had the privilege of attending the 2nd Annual In- ternational Bar Association (IBA) and International Law Student Association (ILSA) Conference that was held September 5-6, 2014 in the picturesque Bloomsbury district in London, England. Del- egates poured in from the following countries: Australia, Bangladesh, Belarus, Belgium, Benin, Croatia, England, France, Germany, India, Iran, Kuwait, Lithuania, Nepal, Nigeria, Pakistan, Pan- ama, Switzerland, Ukraine and the United States of America. This article is meant to serve as a summation for those of you who were not able to join us
On the first day of the IBA-ILSA Conference, Pra- modhan Vanniasegaram, Chair of the IBA ‘s Law Students’ Committee, and myself opened the conference. Pramodhan, who flew from Australia to participate in the conference, began by intro- ducing the audience to the IBA and welcoming all of the delegates. I followed by introducing ILSA and encouraging everyone to make the most of the conference by not only staying engaged during the speeches and panels but also by con- necting with each other. I truly believe one of the greatest resources we have at these conferences is the ability to learn from each other’s legal ex-
periences and cultivate meaningful connections that we can nurture after we return home.
I then introduced Stephen Denyer, a Council Member on the IBA Section of Public and Profes- sional Interest as well as the Head of City and International at The Law Society of England & Wales. In his opening remarks, Denyer empha- sized the importance of the five “–tions”: inno- vation, collaboration, education, globalization and communication. He reminded delegates that by investing in these truths, they could be at the cut- ting edge in the international legal arena.
Denyer’s speech acted as a perfect segue into the conference’s first panel presentation titled “Getting Hired: Tactics and Tips for Applications, Interviews and Assessments”. Panelists included Aster Crawshaw, Vice-Chair of the IBA Academic and Professional Development Committee and partner at Addleshaw Goddard as well as Sarah Hutchinson, Co-Chair of the IBA Academic and Professional Development Committee and Direc- tor at Savage Hutchinson Ltd. The distinguished panelists drew from their own experiences and gave practical, pragmatic step-by-step advice for those pursuing careers with a special eye towards international corporate law. They em- phasized continual self-evaluation, perseverance, and self-development to stay competitive in an ever-evolving market.
The second panel, titled “Strategic Decision Mak- ing in Law” was presented by Professor Mihael Jeklic from the University College London and King’s College London. His lecture quickly be- came an interactive session that captured every- one’s attention as he challenged the audience to
