hroughout the year, girls in Year 7 participated in a Foreign Language Spelling Bee organised by ‘Routes into Languages’ in which thousands of budding linguists across England and Wales

participate. The competition takes place across four rounds, and the pupils have to learn 50 new foreign words per round, and spell as many as possible in one minute.

Four girls took part in the South-Eastern Regional Final in Brighton in April, Catherine Haurie-Moss and Isabelle Brattle for Spanish, Amelia Hardy for French and Paris Gill for German. The girls all did very well, bravely standing up in front of hundreds of other participants, parents and teachers and all managed to spell at least five words correctly in one minute in their chosen Language.

Very excitingly, Catherine Haurie-Moss beat off stiff competition to win a place to

represent the South East for Spanish in the National Final in Cambridge on July 4th.

At the final, Catherine spelt an impressive 17 words correctly but the winning participants scored 20 or more words. Mrs Haurie, who accompanied her daughter on the day, said "Catherine did really well but the competition was fierce. I was very impressed by the standard and children's desire to win." Many congratulations to Catherine for getting so far in the competition against thousands of other participants. She did Mayfield proud!"

Maths Challenge O

n Tuesday 29 April 2014, Mrs Motoc accompanied our team to the

Regional Final of the Team Maths Challenge at Robertsbridge Community College.

The team consisted of Ashley Stone and Lucia Gonzalez (Year 8) and Chelsea Henshaw and Maple Ng (Year 9). The girls enjoyed immensely being part of the challenge, racing back and forth with answers in the relay or simply working as a team.

Congratulations to them all for showing great skills and thinking ‘outside the box’.

he trip to the Big Bang Fair South East was fun, inspirational and entertaining all at the same time. Whether you’re interested in Science or not, it’s well worth seeing.

The “stalls” are basically stands with activities for you to do in order to learn something interesting about Science: Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Astronomy or Surgery/Medicine. We did things like performing a mock surgery, looking at the sun through a telescope, meeting a live bald eagle and seeing a robot that copies your movement in action. The best part is that there are so many that you couldn’t possibly get bored.

Some of us came away from the day with new future career prospects, while others were telling everyone about what they’d seen and most sentences began with “did you know…?” I’m sure the rest of our year group would agree with me that we enjoyed ourselves thoroughly and we would definitely go again given the choice.
