utside the Concert Hall, the audience encountered a display of four mannequins, dressed in toiles advertising the Fashion Show.

An attractive garland made of calico flowers decorated the double doors leading into the hall. Hundreds of beautiful candles set the scene when the lights went down and Schola, our very own choir, delighted us with a pitch perfect and very touching rendition of Handel’s ‘As Pants the Hart for Cooling Streams’.

During the first half 58 young ladies modelled their toiles. These showed the evolution from a spark of a bright idea, through drawings in a sketchbook, to pattern making and finally into a recognisable garment. This year’s theme was ‘religion’ which was reflected, among others, in a beautiful tableau of Noah’s Ark, hand painted on a dress,

as well as a dove of peace, painted and appliqued on a dress and matching bag.

The interval saw the audience hot-footing it to the Hub to enjoy a glass of wine or cordial. Happy laughter and chatter filled the air.

When all the models appeared on the stage together for the finale, I was quite staggered by the sheer talent on display and the amount of hard work that had gone into the whole production. The joy reflected in the faces of these talented students and their appreciative audience made it an event to remember!

The English Department would like to thank all the girls who worked hard to learn their lines off by heart and to congratulate everyone who took place in the final. Judge, Mrs Gaisford, said: “It was such a privilege. I was enormously impressed by how well the girls knew their lines and by the variety, the confidence and the enthusiasm of the girls. I really would have loved to have been able to give them all prizes, as they all so richly deserved.”

Mrs Evans, Head of English, was delighted with the breadth of range of responses to the competition this year. She commented: “The competition is growing, not just in numbers of contestants, but in quality of performance. The Year 9s and 10s this year gave some very finely nuanced and original deliveries of Shakespeare's lines. Girls who have listened to the judges' feedback each year have really developed into confident, thoughtful speakers. We have some amazingly talented girls at Mayfield - well done to all the participants.”
