gnoring the glorious sunshine on a Sunday in May, the English
Department took a number of students to see King Lear at The National Theatre in London. The play featured Simon Russell Beale as Lear and was produced by Sam Mendes.
Literature students from Years 10-13 were moved by the three and a half hour production which was relentlessly intense and moving. Students were astonished by the brutal violence the play contained, though squirmed less than their teachers at witnessing it!

Gold Awards in the British Biology Olympiad for the third year running!
The First Round is a two hour multiple choice paper with questions based on A level Biology specifications and topics beyond the curriculum. Candidates who achieve a Gold Award are then eligible to go forward to the Second Round with the hope of securing a place on the four-student team to represent Britain at the 25th International Olympiad. You may remember that last year Anna Sozanska, who is now studying Medicine at Cambridge University, gained a place on the British team at the International Olympiad in Switzerland. This year the International Olympiad will take place in Bali, Indonesia.

Earlier this term five Sixth Form Biology students took part in the First Round of the British Biology Olympiad: Ellie Cox, Mojisola Agboola and Flora Hickish (Year 13), and Sophie Malorey and Lydia Potter (Year 12). The Biology Department is delighted to report that all five students gained an award, with Ellie and Moji achieving the highest award of Gold. This is a tremendous achievement for Ellie and Moji, and means that both students have qualified to take part in the Second Round in March. This is the third year running that students at Mayfield have gained Gold Awards in the British Biology Olympiad. Flora Hickish gained a Highly Commended Award, and Commended Awards were achieved by Sophie and Lydia.
