Assemblyman Wagner meets with East Orange constituents

Some 50 citizens participated

in a lively conversation with As- semblyman Donald Wagner (R- 68th) at a town hall meeting held Aug. 23 at Fire Station 23. The topics ranged from mandating businesses to join a local cham- ber of commerce, to surreptitious funding of the California bullet train, to Disneyland “E” tickets. Wagner shared “inside” stories

about how the legislature works, reported on bills he has submit- ted and their status. Of particular interest to the Orange Park Acres community was Wagner’s an- nouncement that an OPA-spon- sored change to the California Vehicle code has landed on Gov-

ernor Jerry Brown’s desk for sig- nature. The code change allows the County of Orange to take equestrian traffic into account when designing vehicular speed limits in the unincorporated areas of OPA. Among those present were

Fred Whitaker, Orange mayor pro tem, Diana Fascenelli, Villa Park mayor pro tem, and Villa Park council members Deborah Pauly and Greg Mills. Laura Thomas, Sue Philipp,

Jim Cathcart, and Don Bradley represented the Orange Park As- sociation, which hosted the event. Whitaker spoke about the quality of life in the City of Orange and

warned that a current $250 mil- lion unfunded pension liability will force difficult decisions to be made during the next two years. The Orange Acres Back Break-

ers 4-H club began the meeting, leading the audience in the Pledge of Allegiance.

The library’s cabinets and counters were reconstructed; new carpet and lighting were in- stalled, new paint applied, and a new checkout counter welcomed two happy librarians. the interior has been repainted. Work continues on designs inside the gym to recognize the school’s athletic accomplishments. An all- weather track will get plenty of use for athletic events throughout the year. The parking lot has in- creased by 50 spaces, but a sink- hole in the parking lot is being in- vestigated to determine its cause and for a safe repair. Five science labs at Hewes

Middle School were renovated with new utilities, flooring, light- ing, ceilings, drywall, paint, win- dows, casework, furniture and state-of-the-art technology. A campus-wise sewer replacement was also part of this project.
