©Foothills Sentry 2014 West Nile

virus warning Orange County Vector Control

warns that 2014 is on pace to be the worst year for West Nile virus in the county. The disease, which can cause severe illness, perma- nent disabilities, and, in rare cas- es, death, is transmitted through the bite of an infected mosquito. Recent tests found that about 80 percent of the area’s mosquitoes are infected with West Nile. To help reduce the risks of bites

and infection, drain all stagnant water around your home; avoid runoff from overwatering lawns and washing vehicles which stays in street gutters and underground storm drains; check that all door and window screens are in good shape; stay indoors at dawn and dusk when biting mosquitoes are most active; wear repellent when outdoors. Birds often die from this infection. Should you find a dead bird, report it to Vector Control (714) 971-2421 or visit ocvcd.org.

OC opposes gas tax

The California Air Resources

Board is proposing expanding its cap-and-trade program to include more taxes on gasoline, diesel fuel and natural gas, effective Jan. 1. The goal of the tax increase is to help reduce the state’s green- house gas emissions. The Orange County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to send a request to Governor Jerry Brown to delay the tax increase “until fuel cost increase concerns have been mitigated.” The county also expressed concerns about higher costs for residents and fi- nancial impacts on government services involving vehicles.
