Not everyone heard the call for the family portrait, but a good portion of the Lievanos family smiled for the camera.
A sea of gray T-shirts swamped A family tree grew in Orange
the scene at Hart Park in Orange on a recent Sunday, when nearly 300 members of the Lievanos fam- ily – most of them born in the City of Orange -- met for a reunion pic- nic.
The assembled kin spread over five generations, from the oldest,
Seferina Pineda, 94, to one-week- old Elliott. The majority of this family still live in Orange Coun- ty, staying close to their Orange roots.
Manuel Lievanos is everyone’s common ancestor. His daughter, family spokesperson Emma Lieva- nos Valentine, is one of 12 children
who have remained geographically close their whole lives. Emma says that her father was always proud that he and his wife Maria were the first parents to have a baby baptized in the not-quite-finished Holy Family Church that origi- nally stood at the corner of Shaffer and Chapman in Orange in 1922.

Robert Douglas As a concerned resident of Or-
ange for the past 17 years, I have studied, worked and served with- in our community. I have a B.A. from Cal State, Long Beach and an M.A. from Chapman Uni- versity. I served in the Marine Corps for seven years and was a reserve deputy sheriff for 15. Our community colleges remain the largest provider of affordable transfer programs to four-year universities, job training and ba- sic educational skills essential to gainful employment and the building of our local economy. They provide critical resources to residents and employers with- in diverse urban neighborhoods. With my work as a college professor, I have hands-on expe- rience developing programs and training needed by students tran- sitioning into adulthood and seek- ing employment. As a member of your College
Board of Trustees, I pledge to keep tuition low, reduce text- book costs, improve the avail- ability of desirable classes, en- sure teachers feel supported, keep campuses safe, and in- crease accessible parking. I will help secure public and private revenue to expand these ser- vices. I also promise to bring new leadership, fresh ideas and the decision-making skills nec- essary to balance the budget, while improving the quality of, and access to, affordable college education.
