One other thing Kinky. Tell me about the Utopia Animal Rescue Center. Yeah, Utopia Animal Rescue Ranch is going into its 18th year, and I recommend that everybody look at
utopiarescue.com. We’ve adopted thousands and thousands of animals, mostly dogs. We have about 60 of them out here now in big open air pens with trees and all. We take any stray or abused animal. We’re a never kill sanctuary, and we get money from all over, from people we have never met. I call them “the defenders of the strays.” That’s about as high an accolade as you can give somebody, to be a defender of the strays. It’s a very Christ like, Ghandi like, Mandela like thing to do.
I just love dogs myself. Yeah, it’s a great thing to do. I’ve got about four of my own. Rescued mutts. They’re ter- rific. But the Rescue Ranch has been great.
We had a big concert recently that raised a lot of money with Billy Joe Shaver and Asleep at the Wheel, and fea- turing this young guy Chet O’Keefe from the Northwest. He’s just moved to Austin, but he opened a bunch of shows for me in Sweden and Norway. He’s a terrific song- writer, maybe the best this side of Woody
Guthrie.Check him out if you can, Buffalo. He’s great. And then my friend Jessie Dayton who played guitar with Waylon and Johnny Cash was also on then bill. So that was a great show. So right now, I’m writ- ing the book- the curse of being multi-talented you know (Laughs)- and doing these tours, leaving politics
behind for the moment. There was only ever one guy older than me in Texas who was suc- cessful in politics, and that was Sam Houston, so that’s a long time between dreams.
So I guess my dream of seeing you run for the White House in 2016 is out? (Laughs) Well, the whole country is turning Libertarian. Left Libertarian or right Libertar- ian, it’s the same thing. We’re realizing that Republicans and Democrats are the same guy admiring himself in the mirror. Of course the best thing to do is to limit all politicians to two terms. One term in office and one in prison. •
