it wrong and their feelings would be hurt or something. In Willie’s case he took it as it was intended, as a compliment. Then we started talking about Nashville, which we both have strong feelings about, and I said you know the town is now a corporate town. If there’s a Roger Miller or a Willie Nelson out there we’re not hearing from ‘em. Because the music coming out of Nashville is getting worse and worse. (Laughs) It’s the same 12 people, it’s Taylor Swift, Brad Paisley, Blake

still there. That is still happening. I mean, Willie didn’t mention what happens to these people. (Laughs) They get chewed up and spit out, 99.9% of the good ones. But none the less, he’s right. There are still people coming every day with dreams and with songs that are probably pretty good. But I call it the lost art of country music. It’s hardly there any- more. That’s why I congratulated Willie a week ago on Band of Brothers. It’s so hard in such a fucked up world, in such a fucked up music business where nothing means any- thing to anybody, and the whole culture has ADHD, nobody wants to listen to a whole song, much less a whole record. What does it mean that you’re number one? It’s over three days later, same with the movies. Part of the problem is 14 year old girls are buying the music, and 14 year old boys are going to the movies. Billy Bob (Thornton) was right. That’s why Jane Mansfield’s Car (see Billy Bob interview in KUDZOO magazine #2, October 2012) is not seen by more people. Totally politics.

I loved that movie. Yeah, it might even be greater than Sling-

Billy Bob Thornton and Kinky hangin.’

Shelton, I don’t know... it’s terrible. Every since Willie left Dodge and Roger Miller did his last album, Shel Silverstein, Tompall Glasier died, Johnny Cash couldn’t get a record deal. For Johnny Cash to not be able to get a record deal is like Van Gough not being able to sell a painting. Kris Kristoferson left. What’s left is these whore houses of teams that are nothing but derivative. Everything sounds the same. It makes me sad. I think maybe there was a window in time and Nashville has closed its window. And Willie said no, he doesn’t feel that way at all. He said look, there’s still young guys coming to Nashville in pickup trucks every day with suitcases full of songs and real dreams. It’s

blade. It’s all Billy Bob. It was funny as hell when he said “How do you direct Robert Du- vall?” (Laughs) How do you tell him to go into the fucking kitchen, get a cup of coffee and walk out. (Laughs) No, there’s no way to di- rect Duvall, he gets it right every fucking time. It’s like telling Frank Sinatra you want a third and a fourth take of something. He’s not gonna do it. He believes you get it right the first time of fuck it. And that’s kind of my atti- tude about writing in general, about not using a computer. I type it, and if I don’t get the Buffalo character correct I tear that page up and throw it in the fire and start over. Whereas, if you have this mediocre mentality that the internet has given us, at least for cre- ative writing, you might miss the Buffalo
