Red Arrows pilot inspires high-fliers
Good communication and the value of learning from performance are key aspects to focus on for those who aim to lead successful companies, Simon Meade OBE, a former Red Arrows pilot, advised directors at a Hampshire dinner recently.
“A lot of businesses don’t realise that it’s important to look in detail at your successes – you can learn just as much from your successes as you can by going over your failures. In the display team we would spend 30% of the day talking about how it went last time and learning from it,” said Meade in an inspirational
presentation to high-flying business leaders at the event hosted by Spectrum Corporate Finance, law firm Blake Morgan and HSBC.
Meade added: “Leading an elite display team is in many ways no different from managing any commercial management team. The consequences of getting it wrong are more extreme, perhaps, but the principle is the same – you have to chase out the fine details to succeed.”
Formerly leader of the Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team and COO of a front- line Harrier squadron, Meade was a

guest speaker at the event attended by directors of many of the south’s leading businesses.
Following a 20-year military career, Meade now works as a corporate adviser using his experience in decisive leadership, communication and motivational skills to assist companies in the renewable energy and clean technology sectors.
Also speaking was Peter Bewsey, former CEO of National Car Parks and group chief executive of Chelsea Village Plc (which includes Chelsea Football Club) who shared his wisdom gained over 30 years of organising and engaging management teams.
During the evening at Lainston House near Winchester, the two experts gave their insight into strategies successfully adopted by businesses to engage management teams and improve performance.
Manoj Styche-Patel, divisional director of commercial services at Blake Morgan, said: “They were inspirational speakers whose experience and practical advice will stay with those present for a long time."
Simon Davies, managing director of Spectrum Corporate Finance, added: “It was great to see so many quality businesses together to discuss issues of real relevance in the current marketplace. Retaining high-performance teams is paramount to securing overall success, and the insights we heard and discussed will be of benefit to us all.”
Mark Frettingham, head of corporate banking at HSBC, summed up: “This has been a great event that has emphasised the need for leaders in business to define strategy and to build quality teams.”
