Judges’ Shortlist Paul Reilly, managing partner at Peter Brett Associates: Reilly joined leading development and infrastructure consultancy PBA in Reading eight years ago, and is currently overseeing an ambitious five-year growth strategy that aims to practically double PBA’s turnover to around £65m and staff numbers to 800. In 2012/13 PBA achieved 25% year-on-year growth.
Simon McMurtrie, group CEO of Direct Wines: McMurtrie joined the family-owned Direct Wines in 2008 and since then has restructured its operations to focus on sustainable profit and international market growth. Today the company employs 623 UK staff, including nearly 200 based at its Theale headquarters. International business has grown from 7% of group sales in 2006/7, with 30%-plus projected in 2014/15.
Andrew Hammond, managing director Oxford Products: Hammond was named as Oxfordshire Business Person of the Year in June, as the family-run Witney firm doubled up with the Oxfordshire Business of the Year title. Andrew’s father Alec started the cycle and motorcycle accessory business in 1973 before handing over to Andrew. Since 1997, the company has gained worldwide sales and a 90-strong workforce. Turnover is expected to hit £22m this year.
Michael O’Byrne, CEO Ability Matters Group: O'Bryne’s roots are in the prosthetics sector. Since the 1980s he has developed the innovative Ability Matters Group of manufacturing and consultancy companies dealing with prosthetics and orthotics. Recently re-branded and re-structured this Oxfordshire company now has international trading links, retail shops and lift and hoist products within its offering.

Judges’ Shortlist Owen Mumford: Established in 1952 by Ivan Owen and John Mumford, Owen Mumford is now an industry leader in the medical device market with offices, manufacturing sites and a network of distributors around the globe.
Mathematical Market Research: MMR was established in 1989 by Professor David Thomson “to improve the way market research is conducted, by bringing scientific rigour and sensory expertise to bear on the development and optimization of food and drink brands.” It is now the UK’s largest independently-owned consumer research agency and continues to grow with teams in Oxfordshire, London, New York, and Shanghai.
CH & Co: Robyn Jones founded CH&Co with her husband Tim in 1991 on a Government Enterprise Allowance. Their vision was to gain a reputation for improving food at work by providing exceptional eating experiences. CH&Co now has a multi-million pound turnover, employs almost 2,000 people and holds 140 contracts nationwide.
Vail Williams: Stretching back more than 25 years, UK property consultant Vail Williams has established a highly successful track record for its client- focused approach to business and commercial property investment. Formed from the Thames Valley-based merger of Pearson Williams and LS Vail & Son, the firm has grown significantly since 1988 with more than 130 staff and 12 partners now advising clients throughout the UK from five regional centres.
