• The CBI has appointed Rain Newton-Smith as director of economics. Newton-Smith was most recently head of emerging markets at Oxford Economics where she managed a large team of economists and was the lead expert on China. Prior to that, she worked in monetary policy and international forecast to the MPC at the Bank of England.
• SGPB Hambros, the UK wealth management arm of Societe Generale Private Banking, has appointed Daniel Way (left) and Jeremy Hill (right) as senior private bankers to its Newbury office, working with team head Rebecca Constable, director private banking. Way began his career in investment banking and then moved into private banking in 2008. Hill started his career in client and business development at IBM, and has been involved in business change and consultancy work, before moving into private banking three years ago. Constable has been advising private clients, charities and foundations for over 20 years. Amanda Alexander (centre) has also recently joined as a senior wealth planner based in London. She is a chartered financial planner and a fellow of the Personal Finance Society. Having worked with both business owners and entrepreneurs, Alexander brings over 20 years' financial planning experience to the team. Constable said: “We are delighted to welcome the new joiners. The team is now well formed to build on relationships established in the southern region, in advising clients to manage their wealth.
• Judith Rountree, solicitor in the dispute resolution team at leading Newbury-based law firm Gardner Leader, has been promoted to associate following a highly successful legal career since joining the firm in 2009. Her five years' post- qualification experience – together with a track record for winning complex litigation cases and excellent business development skills – saw her crowned Young Lawyer of the Year last year at the LawNet awards, a national organisation which has been supporting independent law firms for 20 years. Two paralegals, Becky Reilly and Cate Beavis, have joined to support the commercial and conveyancing team while Steph Cummings, Ellie Clifford and Claire Andrews start their training contracts this month as part of their final stage to qualifying as solicitors.

• Law firm Charles Lucas & Marshall has elected Hemant Amin as its new managing partner. Amin, who joined the firm in 1989, has been a member of its management board for 10 years. He will continue as practice development partner as well as taking over as managing partner from Malcolm Poynter on August 1. Amin will also become president of Newbury Rotary Club in July. Poynter will continue to head up the firm’s commercial property team. David Thomas, head of Charles Lucas & Marshall’s Wantage office, has been re-elected as finance partner. The firm, which has offices in Newbury, Swindon, Wantage and Hungerford, has been operating in the Thames Valley for nearly 150 years. With clients throughout the south of England, it advises many of the region’s leading commercial businesses and high-net- worth individuals.
• Professor Ruth Farwell, vice chancellor of Buckinghamshire New University, has been elected as the new honorary president of the Association of University Administrators (AUA). The AUA is a membership body that exists to advance and promote the professional recognition and development of all who work in professional services roles in higher education, and to be an authoritative advocate and champion for the sector. Farwell’s role with AUA commenced on August 1 and will last for a period of two years.
• Commercial property expert Vail Williams has added to its team in Reading, as it continues to expand the business with a cohort of new recruits around the country. Appointed to the Reading office is Marcus Smith who joins as associate in the business space discipline covering the Thames Valley area. With 16 years’ experience, Smith specialises in the disposal and acquisition of office, industrial and mixed-use schemes across the Thames Valley and into West London for occupiers and landlords.
• Chris Maw has taken the role of senior partner of PwC’s Uxbridge office, succeeding Suzi Woolfson. Maw moved to the Thames Valley earlier this year from the firm's Norwich office, where he was office senior partner and leader of the East Anglian assurance practice. He brings a wealth of experience working with private and family-owned businesses. Throughout his 28-year career with the firm, Maw has worked with a wide range of privately-owned businesses from start-ups to those attracting private equity investment or undergoing an IPO. The firm has also announced a number of new partner and director appointments across its Reading and Uxbridge practices. In Uxbridge, partners Sarah Quinn and Alex Hookway join assurance and Andrew Bell joins tax, while Alex Crompton has been promoted to director in assurance. In Reading, Dave Falmer has been promoted to assurance director, along with Alex Pascoe and Rachael Wilkinson who have been promoted to director within the deals team. These are just some of the individuals who have been promoted within the Uxbridge and Reading practices, along with a number of managers and senior managers. The firm is also recruiting record levels of graduates and school leavers to join the 750-strong Thames Valley practice in September 2014.
