Burton & District Chamber of Commerce

Guests at Burton & District Chamber of Commerce ‘Women in Business’ event at Hoar Cross

More than 60 delegates attended a sell-out event which saw two of the Midland region’s local enterprise partnerships (LEPs) join forces. L-R are: Ron Dougan, Andy Street and Simon Chapman (Burton Chamber vice-president)

Burton & District Chamber represents the same area as East Staffordshire Borough Council, of which the large towns of Burton upon Trent and Uttoxeter are integral. The area is famed for its strong links to engineering and food processing, as well as its brewing heritage. Burton & District Chamber is working hard to make sure that smaller businesses, especially in those smaller sectors, get all the assistance they need to ensure their survival and more importantly their prosperity. One way is through creating new and innovative products like Future Faces which aims to support staff who are in the early stages of their career and are looking to develop motivation, inspiration, leadership, sales and communication. With a growing membership, Burton & District is working hard to forge enduring partnerships with businesses in the local area, such as the long-standing business relationship with Burton College. With more than 20 per cent of the region’s workforce in membership, Burton Chamber is strong and performing favourably within the group.

The Chamber is experiencing a recent growth in membership and it is hoped this will continue with the development of new member services and sector specific membership categories such as manufacturers and retail, through initiatives such as ‘Enjoy Burton. In addition, Chambers of Commerce in our group and Staffordshire

have combined in a ground-breaking move to deliver part of a programme funded by the Regional Growth Fund (RGF). Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce (GBCC) and the newly-

named Staffordshire Chambers of Commerce (SCC) have linked for the first time to deliver the Stoke-on-Trent & Staffordshire Growth Hub, which promotes economic growth by working with local businesses. The Stoke & Staffordshire Growth Hub will provide a much-needed service to put businesses in touch with expert help. There’s an emphasis on growth and the big target for the hub is job creation. The hub will point businesses in the right direction for the right sort

of support. It is hoped it will encourage more businesses to take up support that might at the moment be put off by the complex landscape. In addition, a new sector specific forum has been launched for manufacturers in Staffordshire.

The Staffordshire Manufacturing Forum is a fantastic opportunity for Staffordshire based manufacturers and where they can meet and learn about new technologies, best practice and market opportunities.
