Lisa Crafts’ sly, whimsical animations use a deceptively light touch to bring attention to environmental devastation. Her animation combines stop-motion animation, video, pho- tographs, and audio design. In “Still Life with Gummibears” and “Oil Spill with HoneyBee”, she crosses the lush romantic overtones of Dutch seventeenth century still life painting crossed with moving images of fast food and urban settings. Crafts references the golden age of still life paintings, which coincided with the age of exploration, and the ramifica- tions of the capitalism, industrialization, and exploitation that ensued.
Bio Lisa Crafts is a 2012 Guggenheim Fellow, and has received grants and fellowships from the Jerome Foundation, New York State Council for the Arts, the New York Foundation for the Arts, and The MacDowell Colony. Her commissioned animation includes work created for music television, Sesame Street, and American Movie Classics. In addition to animated films, Crafts paintings have been exhibited at La Luz de Jesus Gallery in L.A., and Cavin-Morris Gallery in New York City.
