EDITOR’S COMMENT F

orecasts from the European Commission in May indicated that whilst the economy of Europe continues to recover (with the possible exception of Cyprus in the Eurozone

and Croatia, whose currency floats against the Euro), more substantial growth will not be achieved until 2015. Past recessions have reduced berth occupancy as

personal budgets are stretched, but as the economic climate improves, boats always return to their moorings. Meanwhile, there is much that marina operators can do to make sure their facilities remain fully utilised and thus profitable. Berth-holders should not be considered a ‘captive

audience’, but given positive reasons to visit their marina. Sailing is a leisure pursuit and although a regatta is often hard-fought when there are trophies to win, it should still be fun with a party held on the quayside or in the yacht club to celebrate the race. Open days are a good way of attracting potential

clients looking for a berth and these can also be promoted to the general public through marketing campaigns in local newspapers, radio stations and regional boating publications. All boat owners are potential clients and open days allow them to

tour the site, look at the facilities and discuss their requirements with marina staff. Casual visitors can also be tempted by events such as boat jumbles, classic boat rallies,

try-a-

boat sessions, demonstrations of nautical skills and entertainment with a seafaring theme. A great example is the Douarenez Maritime Festival in Brittany, which takes place this year from 24-27 July, providing a magnificent spectacle of boats from dinghies to tall ships, plus French food and musical entertainment. Gallic maritime raw folk often finds its way across La Manche when Sur les Docks from Dunkerque in Northern France comes over to play at The Barge in Gillingham, Kent, and the UK has many fine sea shanty men to perform at marinas! * *

In the article headed ‘What are walers?’ in the previous issue of Marina Euro-Report, the contact e-mail for C. M. Ferrer SA of Girona, Spain, which represents Bellingham Marine in Europe, was wrong. The correct address is: oficina@cmferrer.com and more information about walers can be obtained via the website given in the advertisement opposite.

Front cover: The Editor takes a look at Karpaz Gate Marina on the Northern shore of the Karpasia Peninsula in Northern Cyprus. This marina’s duty-free status is becoming more significant as the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus is now one of the last places within the EU’s geographic area that enables tax savings on long-term mooring, fuel, technical service and supplies (see pages 26-27).
