Low-cost metering solutions from Maricer

T

here has been a considerable growth in demand for SMART metering systems within

the marina sector and Maricer reports that its SMART Vend system has proved increasingly popular as operators of leisure harbours battle with the ever- increasing demands on power consumption and utility price rises. Recouping these costs can make a significant difference to the bottom line return for a marina and SMART Vend has been created as a low- cost solution designed to charge berth-holders on an ‘upfront’ basis for all their electricity consumption. With technology ever-changing

and the traditional paper reconditioned card meter no longer available, Maricer assisted in the development of the SMART Vend Meter to not only fulfil the basic functions of the paper card meter, but to provide additional features that bring the system up-to-date with current technology. SMART

MARINA EURO-REPORT • JUNE 2014

Vend is a chip card metering system that works alongside a computer programme and USB chip reader. Using re-useable chip cards, the marina operator simply loads credit on to the card, and the customer then discharges it into the desired meter, thus enabling their service. From its office-based computer,

a marina can set the tariff, load credit on to re-useable cards, set validity dates and view outstanding credits. The software has the capability to produce reports based on usage, re-issuing of lost cards, and set up customer accounts to work in addition to a business standard accounting method. At the berth, the meter has the

ability to accept a credit transfer from the card and return any un- used credit back to the re-usable cards. This is a simple and cost-

effective system giving marina management increased control whilst ensuring customers pay for

the electricity they consume. With a low one-off payment for

the software and reader/writer bed, this stand-alone system is built to withstand the demands of a busy marina, as well as being affordable

for any marina regardless of size. Maricer has just completed

the redevelopment of the Island Harbour Residents’ Association’s Island Harbour Marina on the Isle of Wight, by retro-fitting its SMART Vend Card Meter system. Island Harbour Marina planned to replace its old-fashioned paper card metering system for a new, more reliable and technically advanced metering system. Maricer’s SMART Vend metering system fitted the bill, offering greater control from the marina office computer, in addition to the increased functions at the berth. Maricer SMART Vend meters

were retro-fitted by Maricer engineers into existing service pedestals by making minor modifications. This was a cost- effective way for the marina to
